How air cargo weight is charged
Air cargo is not priced on weight alone. Knowing how it works helps you pack in a way that costs less.

This is what your cartons weigh on a scale, including the packing material.

Volume weight
Airlines also work out a weight from the size of each carton. For air cargo this is usually length times width times height in centimetres, divided by 6,000.

You pay for the higher one
The chargeable weight is whichever is higher: the actual weight or the volume weight.

A carton measuring 60 x 40 x 40 cm has a volume weight of 16 kg. If it actually weighs 12 kg, you are charged for 16 kg.

How to keep the cost down
Pack tightly, fill empty space and use cartons that fit the goods. Smaller, denser cartons bring the volume weight down.
